How long will your portfolio last?

This check projects the number of years your money funds your life under two futures. One where the economy holds and markets deliver their long-run averages. One where a market decline arrives while you are drawing on the portfolio, and your own allocation decides what it costs you.

What this check tells you

The same portfolio, projected twice

The first projection assumes the economy behaves: each asset class earns its long-run average, your spending rises with inflation, and your portfolio is drawn down year by year until it runs out or reaches the end of the horizon. The second projection is identical except for one event. A market decline arrives while you are still taking money out, which is the moment a retiree can least afford it.

Your allocation decides the damage

A decline does not hit every portfolio the same way. The share you hold in stocks, in bonds, in higher-risk positions, in gold and other safe assets, and in cash determines how much of your capital the decline removes, and how much you are forced to sell at the bottom to keep funding your life. That is why the check asks for the five lines rather than a single number.

The full projection arrives by email

The page shows you the two headline numbers. The email carries the year-by-year table for both paths, what the decline costs your specific allocation in dollars, and the same decline met by a defended structure so you can see the years a defence buys back.

How to read this projection

This is an educational illustration. It is not personalized financial advice, and it is not a forecast of what markets will do.

Both paths run on stated assumptions: a long-run nominal return for each asset class, an inflation rate applied to your spending, and a defined market decline in the crisis path. Real returns arrive in a different size and a different order every cycle, and when you are drawing on a portfolio the order matters as much as the average.

Your figures are used to compute this projection and to email it to you, and they are kept with your submission so a later question about your numbers can be answered against the projection you actually received. We do not sell them, and the financial details you enter are never sent to an advertising platform. What we keep, for how long, and who processes it is set out in full in our Privacy Policy.
